Janet Gemmell Attorney at Law

Janet L. Gemmell

Family Law Attorney
Board Certified Family Law Specialist
-What does it mean to be a specialist?

hen you see Janet in her office or on the street, you might think the telephone receiver is permanently attached to her ear. She spends the majority of her time talking with other attorneys and with clients, determined to get them through a difficult time. She doesn't promise pie in the sky – family law issues aren't easy – but she promises to be there every step of the way.

How would you like an internship where you watch the soldiers of the 82nd Airborne jump out of planes at Fort Bragg? Janet did exactly this. She also interned in a highly selective program in the United States District Attorney's Office. How's that for diverse?

Always in a hurry to get things done, Janet graduated cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in three years. Somehow, she managed to find time during those three years to participate in the North Carolina Student Legislature. When one of her bills was passed in the real North Carolina Legislature, however, there was nothing "student" about it!

She earned her law degree from the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University and was selected in 1999 as one of a three-person team to represent Campbell University School of Law at the National Christian Legal Society Conference. Janet went to the prestigious Rosen Law Firm from Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice in Winston-Salem, and started to immediately contribute articles on divorce law to local publications, as well as the Rosen Law Firm website.  In addition to relocating to her husband’s hometown of Wilmington (where she also gets to enjoy the beach and replay fond memories from college at UNCW), Janet continues to associate with the Rosen Law Firm and enjoys the great atmosphere their firm provides.

People would say Janet appears to be utterly fearless - from presenting at Continuing Legal Education courses for other attorneys (who are not always the easiest of audiences), teaching local residents about family law issues at monthly free seminars promoted by Cape Fear Family Law, to jumping off a three-story cliff into water in Jamaica (and climbing up through a cave to get out of the water.) She once climbed a volcano in Ecuador as it was awakening and she participates in the "Lawyers in the Schools" program where she educates students on divorce law in North Carolina. You decide which of these requires more courage. Next on Janet's list is learning to surf, hang-glide, and rock climb.

People rely on Janet to be knowledgeable, empathetic and helpful, but she also knows how to have a good time. Just ask her two German Shepherds, "Fiesta" and "Fete." (Their names mean "party" in Spanish and French, respectively.)  Janet is married to Tyler, has a beautiful bonus daughter living in Western North Carolina, and an adorable yellow lab puppy named Tiki, that her husband is training to go duck hunting.
